David Gareja and Sighnaghi tour Overview

David Gareja’s tour takes place in the southern part of the region of Kakheti, east Georgia. First, we will drive through the Gareja semi-desert, the only semi-desert in Georgia. The most beautiful time of year here is Spring, especially April when the grass is still green and covered with thousands of different colors of flowers.

The first destination of the excursion is one of the well-known historical monuments of east Georgia – the David Gareja monastery complex. Complex was founded in the VI century, and during the middle ages used to be an important religious and cultural center. Actually, the complex consists of 20 monasteries spread in the Gareja desert, but in tourist, routes are included only two of them – Lavra, and Udabno caves. Lavra is the central monastery of the complex and Udabno is well known because of its frescoes in the caves. Udabno is located on the top of the range and hiking there from Lavra takes about 40 minutes. Exactly on the top of the range is the state border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, so tourists will hike exactly on the borderline.

The hike will take approximately 1.5-2 hours. After enjoying Gareja landscapes, we will drive back to the village Tokhliauri, where we will visit the winery estate “Vineria Kakheti”. Owners will show us around their garden and cellar, we will try chacha and wines and enjoy delicious lunch.

After lunch, the next destination for David Gareja and Sighnaghi tour will be Bodbe Monastery, located in the town of Sighnaghi in the Kakheti region of Georgia, is a Georgian Orthodox monastic complex dedicated to Saint Nino, who played a key role in the conversion of Georgia to Christianity. The site, which dates back to the 9th century, features the main church, a defensive tower, the grave of St. Nino, and a spring that is considered to have healing properties.

Finally, we will walk in the “town of love Sighnaghi”. known for its well-preserved 18th-century defensive walls, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It is also famous for its traditional Georgian architecture, wineries, and cultural heritage, making it a popular tourist destination.

This tour can be done as a two-day tour with other tours in Kakheti.
