Itinerary

Departure: Tbilisi (hotel pickup available)

The Kazbegi tour follows the legendary Georgian Military Road northward through the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. This historic route has connected Georgia to the North Caucasus for centuries, winding through the spectacular Aragvi River gorge before climbing to the high peaks of the Greater Caucasus.

Jinvali Dam and Reservoir

Our first stop reveals a stunning man-made lake nestled among forested mountains. The Jinvali Dam, completed in 1986 on the Aragvi River, created this remarkable reservoir that now supplies Tbilisi with drinking water. The blue-green waters create a striking contrast against the surrounding peaks—a favorite spot for locals who come here to fish and escape the summer heat.

Photo tip: The morning light creates beautiful reflections on the calm water surface.

Ananuri Fortress

Rising proudly above the Jinvali Reservoir, this 16th-century fortress once dominated the major trade route to the North Caucasus. The Ananuri complex is surrounded by massive defensive walls and contains two beautiful churches adorned with intricate stone carvings.

The upper fortification features a large square tower known as Sheupovari, the site of the Aragvi clan’s last stand against the rival Shanshe family. While the lower fortification with its round tower lies mostly in ruins, the preserved sections offer a vivid glimpse into Georgia’s turbulent medieval history.

What you’ll learn: The dramatic story of feudal conflicts between Georgian noble families.

Gudauri Viewpoint (Friendship Monument)

At this dramatic overlook, a Soviet-era mosaic monument commemorates the friendship between Georgia and Russia. But the real attraction is the view itself—a breathtaking panorama looking deep into the Aragvi gorge with the Greater Caucasus mountains rising on all sides.

Instagram moment: The curved viewing platform offers perfect angles for dramatic mountain photography.

Cross Pass (2,395m)

We’ve reached the roof of the Georgian Military Road. At 2,395 meters above sea level, the Cross Pass marks the true summit of the Greater Caucasus range on this route. If you’re traveling in April or May, you’ll likely find snow here even while spring flowers bloom in the valleys below – experiencing two seasons in a single day.

Did you know? The pass gets its name from a cross erected here by Russian General Yermolov in 1824.

Gergeti Trinity Church

No image captures Georgia’s spirit quite like this 14th-century church perched on Mount Gergeti at 2,170 meters. Built as the northern outpost of Georgian Christianity, the Holy Trinity Church stands in the shadow of Mount Kazbegi (5,047m)—one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus.

On clear days, the snow-capped summit rises directly behind the church, creating one of the most iconic views in all of Georgia. Even when clouds obscure the mountain, the setting remains spectacular.

Access note: The church is reached by a 4×4 vehicle or a 1.5-hour hike. Transfer by 4×4 is included in our tour.

Dariali Gorge

The northern gates of Georgia. For millennia, this narrow gorge with its sheer rock walls served as a natural fortress, making it one of the most strategic passes in the Caucasus. Ancient geographers called it the “Gate of the Alans”—the only practical route through the mountains.

Gveleti Waterfall (Seasonal)

A 2-kilometer hike through a deep gorge leads to this beautiful cascade. The trail is relatively easy and offers a refreshing conclusion to the day’s journey.

Note: Gveleti is not accessible until late May due to snow and high water levels.

Alternative: Sno Valley

Instead of hiking to Gveleti, we can visit the beautiful village of Sno, where mysterious stone statues stand in the mountain valley. This peaceful spot offers a different perspective on life in the high Caucasus.

Georgian hospitality, wonderful nature, amazing views and tasty food – our trip was very well planned, informative and fun. Also we was lucky to see Kasbegi mount in all its glory, what happends not every day. I would never be able to do such a great trip by myself, so I absolutely will recommend Highlander Travel to all my friends.
